In this, the twelfth painting in my version of the Christian meditations on The Crucifixion, 'The Stations of The Cross', we see Christ in the hours before his death, praying to His Father in fear and trepidation, knowing the fate that awaits him. The image is based on Giovanni Bellini's painting, 'The Agony In The Garden'. But where in Bellini's depiction the foreground is scattered with the bodies of the sleeping disciples, here there are only random pieces of trash - an empty McDonald's burger box, a scrunched-up crisp packet, an empty beer can, waste paper and cigarette stubs. Where in Bellini`s painting Christ kneels praying on a lectern-like rock, here he kneels upon a piece of waste-ground surrounded by a broken-down barbed wire fence. And where Bellini shows Christ praying fervently to the Holy Spirit suspended in a passionately-coloured sky, here Christ is praying to nothing but a passing EasyJet plane (or is the plane just there coincidentally, Christ in fact praying to nothing but an empty, Godless sky?). The modern city below seems to carry on with its impersonal existence - indifferent to the agonising drama that plays out above it. ....The question here is the existence or non-existence of God......an image shot-through with excruciating Doubt. (Coincidentally, once I had finished this painting I realised that the city and its environs seemed very similar to Rio de Janeiro where the great statue of Christ stands overlooking the city, with what looks like Sugarloaf Mountain in the background - whether this is significant I have yet to determine!). This painting is currently not for sale but may be available for purchase after the 'Stations Of The Cross' series has been completed.

"Although I state that much of my work stems from the imagery thrown up by depression, I would say that it is also the imagery of unconscious connection.Indeed the two are irrevocably entwined. It is no accident that the appearance of animal symbols and the use of bodily products such as hair, urine and blood is also influenced by my former work as a veterinary surgeon. Some time spent in psychoanalysis has helped me to illuminate these connections to find a personal mythology, which I believe connects to a universal meaning of what it is to be human. The `otherness` of animals, their power, vulnerability, unselfconsciousness and instinctual drives, and their relationship with us, are potent symbols of qualities we also have - qualities which we struggle with in our attempts to remain in control of ourselves and our society. It is where these tensions meet that my work is situated." Studio: Sculpture Shed, Spike Island, 133, Cumberland Road, Bristol, BS1 6UX. Tel: (0117) 929 2266; Email: michael.hayter@blueyonder.co.uk
