About The Artwork

This, the penultimate image in my series 'Stations Of The Cross', is a depiction in filmic close-up of the moment when Christ is nailed to The Cross. In retrospect, I cannot deny that I must have been influenced by Mel Gibson's overwrought film 'The Passion', in which Christ's blood is splattered around with almost comic abandon. However, my aim in this painting is to focus on the cruelty and brutality of the act of crucifixion itself, with the Roman soldier's blood-spattered foot holding down Christ's arm, whilst he drives home the rough, black nail through Christ's palm (...and maybe I have fallen into the same trap as Mel!). Of Christ's pain all we can see is his curling, spasming hand and a single bloodshot eye. Whether Christ was divine or not, the human tragedy of this scene is hard to stomach. I wanted Christ in this image to be an 'Everyman' - for us to be able to identify with his humanity and the cruelty that man can visit on man (and it usually IS men!). This painting is currently not for sale, but once the series has been completed it may well be available for purchase.

"Although I state that much of my work stems from the imagery thrown up by depression, I would say that it is also the imagery of unconscious connection.Indeed the two are irrevocably entwined. It is no accident that the appearance of animal symbols and the use of bodily products such as hair, urine and blood is also influenced by my former work as a veterinary surgeon. Some time spent in psychoanalysis has helped me to illuminate these connections to find a personal mythology, which I believe connects to a universal meaning of what it is to be human. The `otherness` of animals, their power, vulnerability, unselfconsciousness and instinctual drives, and their relationship with us, are potent symbols of qualities we also have - qualities which we struggle with in our attempts to remain in control of ourselves and our society. It is where these tensions meet that my work is situated." Studio: Sculpture Shed, Spike Island, 133, Cumberland Road, Bristol, BS1 6UX. Tel: (0117) 929 2266; Email: michael.hayter@blueyonder.co.uk
