Clouds can be made of waterdamp in the air, fluids in air or water, dust, ashes, smoke and so on. Waterdamp clouds have ornamented our skies since the beginning of time, constantly changing the light on our landscapes, their appearance unmodified by humans.. Usually, I work with resin on canvas, but for these series about cloud structures, I prefer traditional oil paint-on-canvas, though in very thin layers, witch allows me to work with light & darkness, and so gives the work an atmospheric ambiance. This work has won the Emerald Award in Gallery Rings 'Landscape' Competition. The jury found that: “STRUCTURES OF LIFE..XC is staggering. Mighty and unapologetic volcanoes gather for an exclusive meeting at the bottom of the picture to discuss the maintenance of their commanding superiority and fearsome reputation. Their dark, crimson presence makes a strong silhouette against the glowing, yellow sky that possesses the centre of the scene. Billowing clouds of ash and gases propel upwards ballooning into a breathtaking monochromatic design in various orange tones that overpowers and humbles. An exceptional understanding of colour, value, compositional balance and brushwork is demonstrated throughout this active, awesome and poetic painting.”

Born in Amsterdam in 1969, I was trained as a decorative painter and worked doing faux marble finishing, gilding and other decorative techniques while exploring in my own paintings on canvas new ways to paint and express my vision of the world. Today I use traditional oil paint and epoxy resin, among other components, to create thick river stone-shaped canvasses, with a lot of depth, representing organic structures, which I see as the ‘Structures of Life’ and my portraits. Beside my commissioned work, I like to work on an underground layer of broken fresco. The breaking patterns give the portrait depth, like it tells a story of it's own.
