Sunday Afternoon (The Toilet of Mars) Painting

Diego Velazquez, a painter I appreciate a lot, painted "The Toilet of Venus". A suffragette attacked the canvas with a knife, while it was hanging at the National Gallery in London. Such emotions can Art stir! While not trying to parallel my work with that of Velazquez, the mood of his painting inspired me to a male (Mars) version of it, more modern this time. No angel present, the mirror is propped against a simple bedroom wall, with flowers wallpaper. Art observers have pointed out that Venus could not see herself in the mirror at the angle the painting is showing, Velazquez used angles and perspective as he pleased. And well he did! My Mars is looking at the mirror but his reflected eyes look elsewhere. A little detail I liked to play with. As the title says, this is a young man spending his sunny Sunday afternoon in his room, looking at himself looking elsewhere. I'm not going to load you with the whole story that went through my head while I was painting it, I'm certain your mind can walk its own paths.
