"The Actors" was inspired by a couple of ideas, but mainly the concept of being open physically but closed emotionally. Allowing someone in can be the most difficult aspect of an interaction for some. I also thought about how we often present a mask to the outside world and choose to limit vulnerability by hiding our true selves. The painting is large for me and was made at a time were I was often working alone despite being in a shared studio space. Podcasts were typically the only voices I heard. I think I wanted to surround myself with large figures to "people the studio". There was also (and still is) a drive for to see realistic body types at that scale.
