About The Artwork

Inspired from a photo I took of a fisherman in Mombasa heading out to sea in the late afternoon as high tide sets in almost seemingly oblivious of the treacherous water rising, rising. Which brings me to my point, in life, we make ultimate sacrifices to get to where we need to be. We do whatever we must in the quest of individual actualization. We search for answers to our trivial questions. 'The Calling' represents this story. The Ocean represents life's vastness along with it's ups and downs that we plough through time and again. We are nothing without hope for better things to come. I was once told raven represent "angels of death", they deliver our souls to the next world, which is why I painted one looming over the fisherman's head to illuminate the fact that indeed if we lose hope and focus on our vocation in life, then we might as well sell our souls to the afterlife as we are left empty vessels, robbed of passion, fulfillment, purpose and most importantly, spirit.

Born and raised in Kenya in 8th August 1991, my inspirations are mostly derived from the diverse, rich cultures found here and my surroundings. My style of painting can only be described as a constant journey of self-discovery. Not one who is monotonous, spontaneity is my general theme. I am more passionate about what affects me directly. I dwell on what I feel about certain issues and situations not only from personal experience but what other peoples experiences in their own right. From issues such as global warming, personal tribulation and interpretation of literature to basic observation of people, their culture and animals in the wild. When it really comes down to it, my artistic background in the educational end of the spectrum is quite basic, having practiced it since childhood and excelling in it in secondary school. However, my natural need to be creative has been the driving force in all my work. I thoroughly enjoy using acrylic and oil paints and each painting is a transition from one medium to the other. When I paint, I feel the need to bring into focus the inspiration behind the story I am portraying- it's beauty. It may be a man from a coastal village heading out to fish. The theme is Coastal culture but my aim is to show his struggle, his determination, his perseverance. When I am able to tell a story from an individual point of view, I am fulfilled as an artist. As for life, I believe the most inspirational, beautiful, captivating things are of the simplest nature. I enthrall in capturing everyday life and current issues because that is what we can all relate to.
