The Death of Lono–Crossings Painting

“The Death of Lono” is an on-going painting cycle that emulates the aesthetic style and storytelling of Pacific oral history tradition. The cycle uses idealized imagery and short story arcs that build upon a larger, more encompassing arc based around themes of history, migration and displacement of Pacific islanders from a transcultural point of view. Far from being simply an archaeology of the past, Bön invents a new visual vocabulary of Oceania that brings forth places and atmospheres that are shaped by imagination, desires, failings and triumphs. Challenging Eurocentric views of non-Western cultures and the presuppositions that go into the writing of history and anthropology, and the production of the art of fantasied exotic places and of “the Other” described by literary theorist Edward Saïd, “The Death of Lono” references the violent death and ritual consumption of Captain James Cook in 1779 who "discovered" the Hawaiian islands and was, at first, hailed by the native people as their returning god Lono.
