About The Artwork

During my painting career, I spent a good deal of time in Ireland, in one area I became very familiar; Cahersiveen. Also known as Caherciveen, or Cathair Saidhbhín, it's a lovely little town in Co. Kerry. I walked many hills and paths in and around the area and discovered what I thought to be an old manor house. The earth had long ago reclaimed it to it's own but it drew me to it, and with a little bit of “trespassing,” I took a number of photos for source material in the future. It was a magical place. I wish I could have seen it in it's glory but it's time has passed, and so soon will ours. What crumbling edifices will we leave behind? When I got home I wanted to capture that same sense of wonder that I felt when I walked the ruins. The mystery was palpable. How many stories took place here? How many generations lived here? What were their moments like? So I painted a young lady who came upon the ruin and having dismounted her horse she peers inside plumbing the mysteries of what was.

I've always been taken with light and achieving its subtleties in my work. Light began as a fixation, something I sought to master in an effort to create space and atmosphere. Later, the existence and the absence of light became a device to create formal compositions drawn from public places I frequented. Light in my work has evolved further and has now developed into a character itself, used within Divinely inspired narrative and still life. I use representational imagery through the medium of oil painting. My works are painted on varying primed surfaces. Each painting utilizes many of the techniques prized by oil painters throughout history. Intense value shifts create dynamic contrast, and slight color exaggeration allows the viewer a glimpse of an idyllic sensory experience. My paintings continue to transform as I seek to describe beauty and truth through oil painting.
