About The Artwork
For this mixed media piece, instead of wax, I used different materials including plaster and sand for the texture as I have in much of my recent work. Most of my recent work also incorporates the use of gold leaf, it adds a mysterious element as it reflects light differently to the other materials and mediums, creating something magical with the surface. The inspiration for my paintings seems to be a subconscious process which starts with an image and slowly gets deciphered during and after the process of creation. The 'image' or 'vision' for this particular piece came to me just as I was about to drift off to sleep one day. I then realized the theme behind it was that feeling you have after waking from a dream, trying to de-code its image or message as if it is a secret from a divine place: it has the aura of a gift that we take back from the dream - if only we could remember! I am originally from the UK and have lived in the states for the last five years. I currently live in upstate new york after moving up from west palm beach florida. I grew up in the Shropshire and Herefordshire areas, near the welsh border in peaceful farming countryside in the shadow of the black mountains. But I also call the picturesque Mein valley in the Frankurt area, Germany, home. I am half german on my mother's side and was brought up bilingual. I have also travelled a lot, mostly through europe, incuding Iceland and Praugue but also Mexico and Colombia and of course the states. I love the raw exitment of finding myself alone and lost in a foreign place I have never been before, in a lands and cultures alien to me.
