I consider myself an abstract symbolist as an artist. I use organic forms linked with archetypical symbols that I seem to always be drawn to. The human condition gravitates to context whether it consciously seeks this or not. A line or form on the surface of a painting is like an improvised conversation in visual magic. There takes place the coupling of the experimental, the intentional, and the subconscious in the mix. I use symbols to create themes as a way of creating a mental landscape if you will. I can say that most of my subject matter at this point is beyond my control in its inception. I function as a mediary and editor working with the interaction of the symbols as they appear, and nurturing them to become a clear physical visual entity. As clarity emerges from the symbolic relationships a painting happens. Also as a sculptor I am always interested in the tactile nature of the painting. I often use texture as a point of departure to create an environment that forces clarity through the primitive. Miami is an incredible playground of symbolic language. There is no end to the visual influences from the living tropical flora to the architecture to the Euro, Afro Cuban, and Haitian experiences. As my senses continue to be bombarded with all this I find that I am processing new sources and comingling them with my original archetypes. This makes for an ever evolving visual language. The work is always alive in this setting. As an artist here I am fortunate to process the rich and ever present humanity that makes up this great city. I thrive on diversity and cultural interfaces and I urge all who view my art to do so with this in mind.
