About The Artwork

The wonder of spring and the spirit of home is celebrated in this unique vertical landscape oil painting. Captured along a small town's "Main Street" the charm of a pink cherry tree takes hold in a simple landscape where the essence of place is honored. Vibrant sunlit colors welcome us and rest within the calming cooler hues of shade. Trees and grass cast their mark in artful ways while a covered porch speaks to the transitioning sunlight. The simplicity of the landscape is evident with elements of historic tradition as it's grounding. The beautiful pools of color add life to the quiet afternoon and the comfort of being at home. Inspiration for this oil painting came from my love for small towns with a history. "Main Street" seems to be a constant in a lot of these places and one I am familiar with in my own life. This scene in particular drew me in and instead of making the painting all about the house and it's architecture the landscape in between became the focus.

ARTISTS STATEMENT: I observe, and participate in, the change of hues. I stand alone in a perspective—influenced by the roads and detours that I’ve chosen. The subjects I interpret on canvas dance with tradition, but underneath exists an individual search for freedom. As a creator, I’ve always been interested in working with color. I see my life as having a palette of its own and I seek to have the chroma of my experiences come through in my paintings. Over time, I’ve realized the only way to achieve this goal is to risk exposure—to unveil my simplified forms to the viewer. Whether the forms operate within the context of landscape or still life, the resulting narrative is always a story of merit, regardless of public perception or understanding. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: I was born in Vancouver, BC in 1958 and then moved to California which is where my parents originally met. I lived there until I was 6 when my family moved across the US to New Jersey for my father's work. I grew up in a creative family and pursued art in college only to leave it upon graduation, dabbling with it over the years that followed. In 2010 I returned to painting on a more committed basis. This was spawned by some significant life changes and painting became my respite. I still reside in New Jersey and as an artist I appreciate the proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City. I've been showing my work since 2011 and continue to do so.
