About The Artwork

This work is informed by the perceived relationship between plants, celestial bodies, and human bodies. Relationships often inform my work. Relationships between colors, relationships between seemingly unconnected things, as well as the relationship between sleep and waking life. Enamored with myths of night blooming flowers, I incorporated their silhouettes with comets and stars inspired by their depictions in various medieval manuscripts. These depictions of flora and cosmic occurrences create a mythos of an ancient relationship between their blind bodies. The work also balances between figurative representation and color blocked fields referencing a half-remembered walking daydream among the stars. Formally, I am drawn to bright contrasting colors that are informed by ocular color theory, or the study into how the eyes physically perceive color when information is lacking or delayed. Think of when you stand up too fast or rub your eyes for too long - it is those star colors locked in the eyes that find their way into my work. Ultimately, I seek to further delve into the ancient relationship that humans have with their environment and how that informs our current lives. -Thomas Flynn II This work was originally debuted on Musik Curatorial in October 2021
