Original farm landscape oil painting on canvas.

As a plein-air painter I enjoy visiting many places and absorbing the beauty of nature. This contemporary oil painting captures a farm located in Peace Valley, PA. (Not to my surprise, a peaceful valley is what I discovered as I drove around the area.) As is customary, I took a lot of photos for reference and future studio paintings.

I chose to create the painting using this scene because of its rich composition of shapes and simple architecture. At the same time, I loved the historic charm of a red barn and the green field. Although the painting was created from one of my reference photographs the memory of being there was so strong that it felt like a plein-air experience instead of a studio piece. The entire view had such a "homespun" feel to it and I enjoyed articulating it with a slightly abstract influence. Keying into the "geometry" of what I saw and emphasizing the shapes while expounding on the color in a unique and vibrant way.

This original landscape painting was created on an Ampersand (TM) panel. The piece has a lot of visible brushwork and texture which add to it's character and charm. This is signed and ready for framing.

ARTISTS STATEMENT: I observe, and participate in, the change of hues. I stand alone in a perspective—influenced by the roads and detours that I’ve chosen. The subjects I interpret on canvas dance with tradition, but underneath exists an individual search for freedom. As a creator, I’ve always been interested in working with color. I see my life as having a palette of its own and I seek to have the chroma of my experiences come through in my paintings. Over time, I’ve realized the only way to achieve this goal is to risk exposure—to unveil my simplified forms to the viewer. Whether the forms operate within the context of landscape or still life, the resulting narrative is always a story of merit, regardless of public perception or understanding. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: I was born in Vancouver, BC in 1958 and then moved to California which is where my parents originally met. I lived there until I was 6 when my family moved across the US to New Jersey for my father's work. I grew up in a creative family and pursued art in college only to leave it upon graduation, dabbling with it over the years that followed. In 2010 I returned to painting on a more committed basis. This was spawned by some significant life changes and painting became my respite. I still reside in New Jersey and as an artist I appreciate the proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City. I've been showing my work since 2011 and continue to do so.
