About The Artwork

The ocean liner, American Star, was built in 1940 for the United States Lines. In her 54-year career she served as liner, troopship and cruise ship. She had many names: SS America, USS West Point, SS Australis, SS Italis, SS Noga, SS Alferdoss and finally SS American Star. In 1994, at the end of her life, she was being towed to Thailand to be converted into a floating hotel. During a storm off the west coast of Africa the ship broke the towlines and was left to float free. After drifting for days she beached at Playa de Garcey, on the west coast of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands. No effort was made to re-float her. For many years the wreck was a famous local tourist attraction. After constant battering from the sea she broke in half. As of March 2013, she was only visible during low tide. The fact the painting is released in an American Presidential election year, with the US ship of state itself in unsettled waters, is coincidence. NB: Despite the fact this work is described as 'oil on wood', it is in fact painted in oils on a gessoed panel. The panel is hardboard, known in the US as Masonite.

I paint industrial architecture, townscapes, landscapes, portraits and still life. Many pictures are based on London buildings, some of which - most of which come to think of it - have since been demolished, though not as a direct result of depiction. My interest in industrial architecture stems from the fact that I used to paint outdoors, in front of the scene itself. One of the few places you could do this without being disturbed was on derelict industrial wasteland - brown field sites as they're now called. If you paint in public places passers-by constantly interrupt. They look over your shoulder at what you're doing and say things like: 'My Nigel draws....'
