About The Artwork

It is a world that we see without seeing, that we feel without feeling it, like a blind person finding its way, questioning the matter of things. It makes us fragile and appreciate the ephemeral quality of life. "The Strangers' Case" Night-Glow Gel on paper, glass, frame, light and shadow 26 x 32 x 3,5 cm 2024 TEXT: Excerpts from "The Strangers' Case" Speech from Sir Thomas More" (1st May 5017) "[...] Why, you must needs be strangers: would you be pleased To find a nation of such barbarous temper, That, breaking out in hideous violence, Would not afford you an abode on earth... [...] To be thus used? This is the strangers’ case; And this your mountainish inhumanity. CONTEXT: On May 1, 1517 — now referred to as Evil May Day — riots broke out in London as a response to an influx of immigrant workers. Eighty years later, a play was written that includes some of these events. The play, called Sir Thomas More, wasn't published or performed at the time, quite possibly because it was censored. This speech from the play is delivered to the rampaging crowd by Thomas More, who was sheriff of London at the time. Thomas More asks the rioters to imagine themselves in the shoes of the immigrants they're attacking. The manuscript shown in the video is an original version of the speech and was very likely written by William Shakespeare.

The modern human is a born fighter. Life-threatening opponents have almost vanished from the face of the earth but, as a matter of principle, man is against everything: racism, unemployment, animal testing... But how could he/she/it prevent the passing time from her relentless progress? How could he/she/it outplay his/her/its own destiny? How could he/she/it control the uncertain part of his/her/its existence? Reality is the ugly betrayal of our dreams and wishes. This scandal must be stopped, our life should resemble a sort of Disneyland again, a movie which can be rewound at discretion, a video game in which the vanquished player can be send back to the start position for a new round. Assistance in this process is provided by sedatives, insurances, stimulants. The markets for all kinds of survival strategies is booming: promises that instantly relieve us from our worries, solve our problems, heal our wounds, anticipate our thoughts. There is no lack of ideologies, parties, advertising slogans, ministerial decisions and legislative measures for the protection of the citizen. All of them will help us to overcome the obstacles in life; everything is meant to be better, faster, more comfortable and more beautiful than ever before. In this wonderful world of freedom, a large survival package made of illusions is available to us. We simply have to make the right choices for ourselves in order to find happiness. Unfortunately things do not work exactly as we imagine them. Due to the wrong use of our senses and our intelligence, our disoriented feelings drowned in transient and ephemeral aspects of life have lost their true aim, namely the focus on the essence. Thus, we pervert ourselves, society and the course of the universe. Our unease expresses itself in the fact that we take our relative perception for the unshakeable truth. In our perspective, our personal interpretations and explanations of the real world are absolute. This is the illusion which we fall prey to. This is our real trouble. Mona von Wittlage ARTIST
