About The Artwork

‘The Thaw’, 12x12” oil on 1.5”cradled wood panel with edges painted in Paynes Gray (looks black). I went out into the beautiful balmy, breezy afternoon air after having been shut in with a cold for a few days, and the warmth of the sun on my face felt like such a miracle. It reminded me of this poem, ‘The Thaw’, by Henry David Thoreau: “I saw the civil sun drying earth’s tears — Her tears of joy that only faster flowed, Fain would I stretch me by the highway side, To thaw and trickle with the melting snow, That mingled soul and body with the tide, I too may through the pores of nature flow. But I alas nor tinkle can nor fume, One jot to forward the great work of Time, ‘Tis mine to hearken while these ply the loom, So shall my silence with their music chime.”

Inspired by the landscapes of Coastal California, Karen enjoys spending time outdoors, painting in oil, and considers her plein air work to be a tribute to the enduring, ethereal essence of the natural landscape untouched by industrialization and urban sprawl. The brushwork, mark making, and dripping techniques she uses in her mixed media studio work suggest the passage of time, and is a poignant reflection of her concerns about the delicate balance between humanity, technology and nature. Karen Haub is a Southern California based mixed media artist drawn to intuitive landscapes and figures. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Illustration from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, and has shown her work in numerous galleries in Southern California. Karen has sold work throughout the U.S. and internationally since 2014. The collaborative work that she does with found object artist, Lynn Dodge is focused on bringing awareness to viewers about the destruction of the environment and environmental issues we all face as inhabitants of a dying planet. The earthy, textural elements of each painting combined with the upcycled, found object elements, bring a keen awareness to the viewer that our planet is covered with discarded objects that pollute our environment both in the manufacturing and in the disposal of them.
