‘THE WINTER’S TALE’ is a new painting by the English artist, James Kelso, completed July 2018. Was it February 2018 when the ice storm came? It gripped our postcode on a Wednesday and stayed for ten days or more. The ‘Beast from the East’ the press called it. I haven’t felt so chilled since I got the cold shoulder from the RA Summer Exhibition. My objective in the painting was to try to capture the cold. The name, ‘The Beast’, hung around in the media. A more accurate title from my standpoint would have been ‘The View from the Loo’, for that’s the scene I painted. The title I settled on eventually was, ‘The Winter’s Tale’. A tad more poetic with an added touch of - as they say in the ad world - quality by association. Hanging hardware is included, the painting is wall-ready

I paint industrial architecture, townscapes, landscapes, portraits and still life. Many pictures are based on London buildings, some of which - most of which come to think of it - have since been demolished, though not as a direct result of depiction. My interest in industrial architecture stems from the fact that I used to paint outdoors, in front of the scene itself. One of the few places you could do this without being disturbed was on derelict industrial wasteland - brown field sites as they're now called. If you paint in public places passers-by constantly interrupt. They look over your shoulder at what you're doing and say things like: 'My Nigel draws....'
