This painting was influenced by painters like Rubens, Van Dyck, Sorrolla and films by Paolo Sorrentino. It is a meditation on time, illusions and vanity. While it is easy to criticise the narcissism of contemporary culture and its need to record everything on a smartphone, we all labour under illusions of one kind of another; about ourselves, others or the world we live in. Some neuroscientists even contend that time is an illusion.
