We wait for so much. As girls, we wait for our bodies to tell us we’re women. Once we’re women, we wait monthly to be reminded of this truth. We wait for opportunities. For that boy to tell us he’s interested, for that man to call us back, for the love of our lives to finally ask the question that will change our future. We wait for promotions, to be paid what we’re worth. For a friend to call us back- with her good news, bad news, any news. For that pregnancy test to be positive. Or negative. We wait as a body grows inside our own, we wait for the birth of a child, a birth into our own new selves. We wait until our bodies are ready to grow strong again, to go back to our lives. Then we wait for the next one. This piece reflects the struggle with waiting. The illegible script in this piece is poetry written around the ideas expressed above. Mixed Media on unprimed canvas finished with archival varnish. This piece was created by Madeline K Barry in her studio in Atlanta, Georgia as a part of her 2022 Fall collection, “The Truth About Women”. It ships via Saatchi Art and arrives ready-to-hang.

Atlanta based painter Madeline K Barry has been honing her skills in acrylic abstract portraiture since 2016. Working in mixed media on canvas, she explores the multifaceted nature of women, focusing on the qualities that seem to most contradict each other: Brilliant minds in sexy bodies. Nurturing mothers with thriving careers. Peacemakers that are willing to fight. Her abstract portraits are composed of layers of bright contrasting colors, dark charcoal drawings, gold leaf, and oil pastel. Madeline studied drawing at the Academie Mechelen in Belgium. As a part of the O.M. Art Collective, she expanded her career first through live painting performance at conferences and events before continuing with solo and group exhibitions throughout Belgium, Germany, and later the U.S. Collaborating with artists locally and internationally, Madeline draws her inspiration through uncommon stories from women around the world.
