About The Artwork

This work is numerous thin coats of paint in combination with patterns layered within the paint, in some ways to see whats left at the end of the painting process. With each new coat of paint the previous layers have to fight and hope to be visible afterwards, it's essentially by chance given the choice of little direction when choosing the colours or patterns used in each layer. The painting, abstracted in it's nature, is painted on patterned fabric which is still visible on the edges, attempting to create a dialogue between the Fine and Decorative qualities of the surface and the painting.

A British artist based in the Netherlands, Thomas is predominantly a painter with painting making up the bulk of his portfolio. More recently however he has been adopting and exploring new mediums and ways of working, attempting to explore the boundaries of painting. Testing different ways to consider and exhibit works, his pieces have begun to move away from the traditional acrylic/oil on canvas, which is usually presented and projected by the often white wall. A recurring medium and theme in his work is printed fabric and pattern. Stemming from his upbringing in London in an all female household, this embracing of pattern and in the last year or so the raw printed fabric itself has offered Thomas opportunities to explore new techniques and add a necessary personal note to the works he produces. Continually looking to test himself as an artist he has recently undertaken and completed a Masters degree in Painting at the Frank Mohr International Masters Program in Groningen. This is to further the BA received from the John Cass School of Art and Design in London and add much needed experience and critique to his understanding of Contemporary Art and Art History and in particular his own practice.
