About The Artwork

In this this growing series of contemporary paintings Cleveringa uses the metaphor of the 'filter' and 'screenshot' on the everyday smart phone as the inspiration for capturing the historic influence of the phone, it's immediacy, it's possibilities and its impact on global culture. There are currently three Billion Smart Phone users around the earth influencing cultural change in a myriad of ways. The artist looks at various angles including the impact on the discipline of painting,  the changing psychosocial landscape and transgenerational impacts only to name a few. By using the device as part of the mark making process and by using the ideas of both the 'filter' and the 'photograph' (screenshot) he can hold conceptually a representation of a moment of rapid change and also the end point of a change as a specific time and place as a node in history and culture. The work in this respect becomes a 'cultural text' or artefact. In this inspired painting the original image has been reduced to pixels and painted as a screenshot symbol.
