About The Artwork

I used to live on the edge of the Ashdown Forest in the south of England and would make regular visits to relax, take in the fresh air, or take photographs. It is one of my favourite places. The area is an ancient heathland used during Norman times to hunt deer and is steeped in history. There are trees, both deciduous and coniferous, but much of the land is covered in bracken and gorse, criss-crossed by bridle paths. Having painted a couple of watercolours of Ashdown I wanted to see how I could capture the scenes in acrylics. This is one of four paintings that I completed.

Birds. And Nature. These are the subjects that inspire me. At an early age I loved exploring hedgerows and streams. Teeming with diverse life, they fascinated me. My appreciation of flora and fauna broadened, through travel, to include birds, plants, animals and insects, though birds were always special. I am a British artist and photographer based in Brazil. My nomadic life began in Libya, where I was born, and has taken me to live in 15 countries on 5 continents, visiting 40 or more other countries in my lifetime. Places as diverse as deserts, rainforests and the concrete jungles of city life have been home to me. I remain a keen traveller focusing on commercial Travel / Food photography and writing in addition to painting.  While most of my paintings are in watercolour I also paint in other media. I would describe my style as loose/tight as I like to balance a degree of looseness against the detail found in the key elements of a bird's genus. My aim is to make them recognisable while retaining an element of artistic impressionism.
