About The Artwork

This illustration was commissioned by essayist, Muhammad Abdullah, for his book “ Tales from the Dance Floor.” It is the 2nd in a series following the painting, La Bruja, also in use by the author. Abdullah directed the piece and named it. The process began where La Bruja ended, continuing the stylization and energy while emphasizing characteristics and themes of the new book. The author was interested in the dynamic of the dance floor; he was curious about how couples interacted to create the energy and emotion that is associated with a milonga. He also wanted to highlight the African influences that gave impetus to, and permeates, the art form. I did this by exaggerating the character’s features and adding a drum to the orchestra. In the history of Tango, the drum appears early and was played by slaves in their own rituals. History suggests that the music was audible in the bordellos, which provided a dance beat for some of the more energetic patrons. No doubt, they were unaware that their revelry was the beginning of the phenomenon, Tango.
