Orbs No. 25 Painting

Born October 19, 1951 in West Lafayette, Indiana, USA. The driving force behind my work is my relationship to space. Spheres play a significant role in my paintings - there is no beginning nor end to them. I move through space observing all aspects of a sphere and object that can be described as a mathematical equation and as a component of all matter both universally large and microscopically small. The sphere is the shape that symbolizes the questions and answers of who we are and where we are in this or perhaps in multiple universes. As an artist, I sense energy between shapes, colors and textures. Energy is not confined to the two dimensional surface of paper or canvas. Just as sound travels in waves, so does art. Color is perceived because of the way a wavelength of light is translated by the human eye. The energy of a painting is determined by the interaction of its elements: line, color, shape, value and texture. Energy waves have healing powers. My hope is that wherever my paintings are exhibited, whether in private collections or public venues, the viewers will experience positive, healing energy from the work that will be passed on to their loved ones as well as the to the strangers they pass during day. My style as an artist evolved as the I discovered my voice - my vocabulary of shapes, colors and patterns to describe infinite space and movement. Viewers sense a clear communication with my work as they step directly into the space of my paintings. They are invited to explore, to have their own experiences connected with their personal history, their thoughts and their dreams. The watercolor paintings in the Orbs & Energy Series are the result of splattering, atomizing, dripping, blowing and brushwork. Shapes are either drawn or created by atomizing paint through templates of lace, tools, netting and kitchen utensils. The illusion of space and movement through the painting is the result of many layers of translucent paint, each adding texture, shapes and colors that interact with the layers below. How well the layers work together will indicate that the painting is either resolved or will provide the direction for an additional layer. The final painting is the result of the constant interaction with the painting rather than an expressive observation of the world around me. The variety of watercolor techniques to create textures and veils of vibrant color allow me more freedom of expression than any other medium.
