This watercolor portrait of a Crow Bull Chief is a realistic depiction of a decent, courageous, but disillusioned man who sees his way of life and beautiful land taken away from underneath his feet. So many of us are in the process of reappraising how the management of the European invasion of Indian habitat was handled. We are lucky that the Ancient peoples dating from pre-historic times have not entirely disappeared, in order for them to be able to start introducing us to their humane legacy that could not be destroyed. This work is based on a photograph by Edward Curtis who, having discovered the Western Tribes, dedicated his professional life to documenting their humanity. His legacy is of indescribable value to integrate the past into a world culture that has grown to be a treasure common to us all. In my painting, I bring the man to life in the warrior, who is at all times ready to give his life in the pursuit of a mighty cause. Let the string of bearclaws around his neck speak for itself.

After a fashion design career in New York City, I now paint realistic floral watercolors, and realistic portraits in watercolors, pastels, oil on canvas and digitally tinted portraits. What motivates me to paint Native Americans in this new watercolor collection is the beauty of the true personality and character of a magnificent race of ancient people issuing from pre-history and call doing them justice an awesome honor. In my watercolor flower paintings, I am inspired by the exact luscious realism of Dutch Baroque Flower painting traditions that consoled me throughout my lonely years in boarding school, from which I drew solace in experiencing botanic beauty, elegance, luscious generosity, color, and frivolity, in short, in all things that are out of the realm of a strict upbringing. They still provide glorious satisfaction, even if my standards for classical realism still drive me.
