Wendell Hopperton Painting

I like to challenge myself artistically to keep my creative juices flowing. My steampunk owl is the result of such a challenge, a lot of design and determination went in to creating this painting which hopefully shows a very unique looking bird. I’ve always had a fondness for owls and thought they would make for a very interesting painting. With my subject matter chosen, and the challenge set, I got to work thinking how I could make it “steampunk”. I thought about the owls ability to hunt, their binocular vision and their sharp talons, and the fact they’re used quite widely as a natural form of pest control. I named my owl Wendell Hopperton, and gave him a character befitting of an Army commander, he’s used to making tough decisions and has lived to tell the tale. He’s extremely resourceful and will put his wing to anything, he’s firm but fair and loves his job. He’s realised over the years that he has to rely on stealth and surprise to catch his prey and will pass this knowledge on with pride. He deserves to be on a large canvas with a bold background to really satisfy his ego. I compare designing this piece with completing a logic puzzle, I had to think of what textures and materials I wanted to portray and how they’d all fit together. I have since created several designs in this theme, but this is the one that I’m most proud of. There was lots to consider when designing this piece, which I compare with completing a logic puzzle.
