About The Artwork

Trinidad Piping Guan (Pipile pipile), currently classified as Critically Endangered, with remaining population probably in the low hundreds. However, recent data suggests that the population may now be increasing. As reference for plumage and form, the painting draws upon superb photos by Trinidadian photographer Faraaz Abdool (Instagram @faraazabdool). Trinidad is where one of my hero artists (Peter Doig) lives and works. I guess this painting is influenced in different ways by Doig, Gauguin and Kitaj. Shoulders of giants etc etc. Oils on board, 122 x 68 cm.

My art imagines what birds might say if they could speak our language. They would fear and hate us, surely: we are fast destroying their planet. They would tell us to stop before it's too late. But perhaps they'd frame that with love. I think they would frame it with love. Website: https://www.raphus.co.uk/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/raphus.artist/ Contact: raphus.art@gmail.com
