About The Artwork

This was painted on location at Delphi in Greece, during the winter. I was particularly struck by the scene when there was a bright full moon, partially obscured by fast-moving clouds, which I have captured in the painting. Looking at the moon, I began to think about all the time that had elapsed since the Delphic Oracle was at the centre of human affairs, when it attracted influential world leaders like Alexander the Great. Now it was the middle of winter, and more or less deserted. There was silence as the snow fell, only an occasion dog barked in a far off valley. As usual when I am painting in a particular place, I try to use local materials, in this case, a spike lavender oil, along with raw pigment. I also built up the texture of the paint.
