Why is it that, at a time when communicating is easier than ever before, we are finding it more and more difficult to relate to each other? This is a question I explore in my artwork. There is a lack of focus in our lives and particularly in our most important relationships, with friends, spouses and children. Every year, new self-help books explain why we are feeling disconnected and unfulfilled yet we don't have the time or attention to read them. We have hundreds of online "friends" with whom we share details of what we eat and what makes us laugh then, when we actually see those friends face-to-face, we are distracted by gadgets or our own inability to pay attention. I see these pieces as three-dimensional paintings. Each has a physical depth which invites examination from various angles and creates an intimate, almost voyeuristic relationship with the viewer. Are the figures being spied upon? Are they performing? Or are they just absorbed in their own lives? Today, it is sometimes difficult to tell the difference. These images are primarily oil paint over clay and fabric on wood panels, although at times, additional materials and techniques may be incorporated as part of my process.
