In the early nineties the artist acquired fame using the pseudonym ‘Staaf’ with a series of paintings featuring his orange alter ego, also named Staaf. These paintings where inspired by a number of significant events that the artist documented in a painted diary. In the later years, the artist's work has varied in form, character and content. The name Staaf has remained the same. Today, Staaf paints more intuitively. He likes the process of not knowing where the painting will lead. Each layer, with often totally different subjects, leaves traces that together form the final image. The painting creates itself. The works are dynamic, lived through and often contain humorous elements. In the film and advertising world, Staaf is known by his real name, David de Winter. For commercials, short films and animations, he has been awarded both nationally and internationally. The work shop / gallery Staaf has been located on the Bloemgracht in the center of Amsterdam since the year 2005.
