About The Artwork

The amazing thing is that this could be buildable; say ten stories high- for a museum or public art gallery in a newly emerging country. Shades of an incipient meglomania here... This is the final stage of 'Culture Cabinet' painted at Massey University Art School 4th year studio. Collection of Cultural objects on a background of raw breathing canvas. Appearing housed in a skeletal cabinet, the 'home' of transparent rooms, a solitary gallery or lone bleak museum. It is a universe of random cultural symbols. I am not interested in doing New Zealand themes; that would be as ridiculous as an English artist restricting herself to 'britanica' ideas and ideology; or an American artist restricting herself to 'americana'. Nor on playing on my Irish or English origins, though born in New Zealand; via the internet and media we are all ostensibly world citizens whether we like it or not. No, these are random cultural symbols, signs and references of varying degrees of scale ('false' scale too, in that one item is placed next to another in completes disregard as to maintaining a constant scaling relationship) derived from Hogarth's etching if anything, of false perspectives, so that here is incorporated too false lighting (shadows are random as to direction; creating a lumpy flattening overall- with no consistent spatial perspective to render a plunging deep space of infinity). Everything floats freely like in the minds eye. The twin falsities of scale and lighting combine to suggest an amorphous and permeable reality of visual ideas. Possibly weighed slightly in the masculist direction; but not drearily so. This is not didactic; there is no message. Though the Egyptian and religious origins of sexual/fertility sports and games is implied by pylons in one corner. Painting is sent rolled with full frame etc suggestions as guide so what you save on shipping rolled, can pay for support and framing.

The ecstasy and transports of art is in the drawing. The object, the created art piece, is a grand opera of pleasure and desire. To see is to be. Phillip O'Sullivan paints first with the mind of the brush and imagined scenarios. Has remained as a brush drawer ever since. Can caress or brutally stab the media at will; all varieties of touch or stroke are possible; twirling the brush, scraping the ferule, pushing delicately in random fashion guided by the underlying undulations hap-hazarding themselves on the surface of discovery. Lurking ghosts emerge to tighten into distinct shapes; draughting fixed lines like a precision engineer then violating them with passion. Now work slowly lovingly to create dreadful and powerful cultural and political imagery. In his current University classes is the most engaged; responding transgressively to the ideologies of our time. Artists sees art as a strong revolt against economic, political and cultural conditions. Has traveled to Myanmar, Australia and Asia generally. My artistic inspiration now originates from Expressionism, via a long prior history in Minimalism where he is an established artist. See philliposullivan.co.nz for more of this. New Zealand's most difficult yet rewarding artist. New Figuration, cinema (thriller-horror), contemporary photography, books and material about anatomy, surgery, forensic science and the parallel dimensions such as psychology, cultural studies, dreams, mysticisms...
