About The Artwork

The photograph captures a striking juxtaposition of elements, where the rawness of earth meets the elegance of antiquity within a grand, expansive room. At the center of the space, a pile of dirt and a sturdy shovel stand as a testament to labor and transformation, their presence a stark contrast to the surrounding opulence of antique furniture. The earthy pile and the utilitarian shovel serve as a poignant reminder of the passage of time and the enduring connection to the land. Behind the pile of dirt, an open passageway beckons the viewer to explore further, hinting at the hidden depths and mysteries that lie beyond. The juxtaposition of the mundane and the extraordinary within the composition invites contemplation on the interplay of the everyday and the extraordinary, the transient and the timeless. Amidst the antique furniture, an exhaust fan on the back wall adds a touch of industrial functionality, further enriching the visual narrative with its juxtaposition against the ornate surroundings. The photograph exudes an air of enigmatic beauty, inviting the viewer to immerse themselves in the interplay of elements and the evocative contrasts within the grand, antique-adorned room.

I have been a photographer for four decades in New York and currently reside in Brooklyn. My body of work is titled Misbegotten Places, which involves creating small dioramas from photographs I have taken. Through careful camera angles and lighting, these dioramas are transformed into lifelike images that can often deceive the viewer, while always conveying a sense of "misbegotten." The lines between reality and fiction are blurred, as these lifelike dioramas, when photographed, often deceive the viewer with their uncanny realism. However, true to the collection's title, "Misbegotten Places," each scene is infused with a subtle element of the unexpected or the out-of-place, challenging the viewer's perception and inviting them to delve deeper into the narratives woven within these meticulously crafted compositions.
