About The Artwork

I had a meeting with Cornell Capa, of Magnum Photos one day. He looked at my portfolio of 24 photos in all of maybe a minute. He told me I was all over the place. He said “I don’t know whether you’re a sports photographer or a studio photographer.” His suggestion was to concentrate on one subject. I thought carefully about what he said, yet I still felt I was not going to build a career on just one thing. Two years ago during Covid I discovered there was a hummingbird in my garden. I’ve never been interested in photographing birds per se, let alone a Hummingbirds. In my book NO RHYME OR REASON, I am still all over the place but there are no hummingbirds in the book. While watching the bird fly. I had an epiphany and thought about Ansel Adams trying to make one photograph which sometimes took him a long while. This is very difficult when you’re used to working for SPORTS ILLUSTRATED, TIME Magazine HBO etc. Usually I have only so many seconds to make a photograph. With this in the back of my mind I decided to attempt making great photos of hummingbirds. I quickly found out photographing these birds was similar to meditation. I’d have to wait maybe 45 minutes or longer before they even show up. There is no guarantee. What I discovered was Mother Nature runs the world and I’m just a grain of sand on a large beach.

DiMaggio's photographs embrace the elements of a powerful symphony. We perceive a rhythmic movement, vibrant hues begin to blur and invisible lines direct our gaze toward a sacred center with spiritual intensity. Passive viewing is not possible. He worships Gods like Gene Smith, Alfred Eisenstadt, DaVinci, and Picasso. “If it seems like I'm all over the place, I am, says DiMaggio.”
