About The Artwork

All what I do as photographer has somehow a connection with the circus. I love people who know how to get involved and can accept to take risks. The first circus that I saw, as a child with my father, was a circus that was called Sarrasani. I remember very well the excitement and fear I felt that day, at that chapiteau so intimate, dark, full of color and people who could do everything, even fly over the heads of the spectators. When I lived for several years in Munich I was working on my first book, Circus Life - Everynight, All Around the World (Ed. Stemmle). One day, I found that the city had reached a circus, his name was Sarrasani. It was the same who had visited my city when I was a child and the owner explained to me the adventures happened to his circus now become German. I began to photograph its artists, I wanted to find that sense of unreality, of timelessness and energy I had experienced as a child. The Aereal Artists, were Russians and their act was very intense. I liked the great synchronicity and human understanding by which they put their strength to the service of the beauty of their rounds. I tried to summarize something of that in a portrait.
