I always loved the Angelyne billboards that would periodically appear across Los Angeles. They were such an eloquently condensed visual summation of the city and its culture. I always kept an eye out for variations, diligently running out to photograph them if I spied a new one around town. I used a 4x5 view camera to keep the verticals vertical, with an eye toward combining them in some fashion as a collage. A drive-in theater under the wrecking ball presented itself about the same time, then a counterpoint image of a freeway under construction. So I thought I had a fistful of central components for my Angelyne collage, but I could never quite decide on an appropriate background image as a vessel to fill. The collage was not forgotten, but kept on a back burner. Some years later I was trolling through a box of movie location memories, and as often happens, you find something when you aren't even looking. The iconic movie location of Trona Pinnacles provided the empty landscape to contain a bit of the visual fury that is Los Angeles. I celebrate Angelyne for brightening our bleak little lives! This is an archival pigment print entirely from my own scanned film negatives. It is printed on Epson Legacy Platine paper, a beautiful paper that emulates a traditional darkroom print. Image size is 12 1/2" x 19" on 17"x 22" paper. Print #1 from an Edition of 25 + 2 A/P This print is not framed

I have worked most of my professional life in the movies. That experience has left me with an instinct toward a narrative in my photos. Not always as a straightforward story, but at least as a structure to organize pieces of an image to work together. I look to elevate the mundane in my work, to create an image that rewards repeated visits. Much of my work is a continuing portrait of Los Angeles. I moved to Los Angeles as a young man to go to UCLA Film School, and it turned into a lifelong adventure. I have collected some in my self-published book “Small Pieces of Los Angeles briefly Illuminated”.
