BIOGRAPHY. Philippe Moisan was born in the sixties, child of two graphic artists, he spent his time playing amid their drawings, photographs, typefaces, and listened to the stories told by their painter and photographer friends, Bernard Gorsky, Claude Sauvageot, or Robert Doisneau. From 1978 to 1981 he studied French and philosophy in Versailles. In 1984 during the Cold War, Philippe spent a year in Berlin as part of his military duty, hung out in the Dahlem museum, and listened Karajan at the Philharmony, Wagner’s Tetralogy, sheltered from an icy winter traveling through wintry German countryside and forests by train was to become a powerful visual marker for his future photographs. Moisan rediscovered these sensations later in painter Caspar David Friedrich’s work on Nature. He studied art history at the École du Louvre with egyptologist Christiane Desroches-Noblecourt as well as those taught by Pierre Amiet, curator of the Guimet Museum, and a specialist of East Asian arts. He spent the early part of his career life giving lectures and museum visits to people interested in art and history. Later on, he had a successful decade working in fashion and lifestyle photography for magazines and advertising agencies in Europe and USA. Later, following the advice and instructions of Mr. Georges Fèvres, official proofer of photographers Henri Cartier-Bresson and Josef Koudelka, he absorbed the subtleties of black and white photography printing. Sao Paulo (Brazil) 2001, a period of twelve decisive years began, which gave birth to the photographic allegory from which Philippe still draws his inspiration today. While still working for the fashion world and for advertising agencies, he decided it was time to take a significant turn and to devote more and more time to photographic vagrancies and wanderings during his travels. Immersed in Sao Paulo’s architectural verticality, Philippe began to undertake a long series of portraits of strange characters haunting the streets and nights of this sprawling metropolis.Turn fifty, he quit commercial photography, travelled the world extensively, and pursued life photography which is closest to his heart. “I like to portray life as it is. If you want peace of mind, you need to embrace truths and accept life as it is with all its beauty and imperfections,” Moisan said.
