“Automatic dispenser of sterile powders” 1999, Bristol Myers and Squibb, Mexico City This image is an example of the advanced automation and sterility that characterize the pharmaceutical industry. At the Bristol Myers and Squibb plant in Mexico City I did all I could to recreate the hi- tech magic of the “Sterility test of injectables” captured the year before at the Boehringer Ingelheim plant. Here the subject was an automatic dispenser of sterile powders encased in a glass and steel clean room that partially obstructed the machine. To photograph the dispenser the sterility seal of the clean room had to be broken. To give an idea of the size of the machine I included a small supervisor totally covered to indicate clean room conditions. I also blocked out the background with black velvet to focus exclusively on the technology. For an unobstructed view of the dispenser a vertical structure of the housing had to be eliminated in postproduction. The image was completed by copying the corresponding visible parts of the machine into the empty spaces. At the time I had no assistant and was unable to do the necessary retouching. The complicated digital modification was realized free of charge by my service provider LMI, Laboratorio Mexicano de Imágenes. The 91 cm print comes in a limited edition of 9. Title, author and year of manufacture are included on the print. The print comes with a 2.5 cm white border. Made to order on archival cotton paper in 10 days plus shipping.
