About The Artwork

"Avarice and Greed" captures a scene of unbridled opulence and guarded excess, invoking a sense of both fascination and unease. At the center of the composition, a towering pedestal supports a colossal pile of money, meticulously stacked to form a monument of wealth. The currency exudes a mesmerizing allure, its sheen reflecting the ambient light in a mesmerizing display of affluence. Scattered across the floor, more money lies in disarray, creating a stark contrast to the structured opulence of the pedestal. The juxtaposition of order and chaos within the frame serves as a visual metaphor for the complexities of human desire and the pursuit of material wealth. Standing sentinel around the wealth are imposing gargoyles, their stoic visages serving as guardians of the riches. Their presence adds an element of foreboding to the scene, hinting at the darker undercurrents of avarice and the perils of unchecked greed. The juxtaposition of wealth and guardianship creates a tension within the composition, prompting the viewer to contemplate the implications of unbridled opulence and the moral dilemmas it entails. Above the pile of money, a solitary lamp hangs, casting a warm, ethereal glow upon the scene. The interplay of light and shadow adds a layer of dramatic intensity, heightening the sense of theatricality and symbolism within the photograph. "Avarice and Greed" beckons the viewer to confront the complexities of human ambition and the allure of material wealth, offering a visual meditation on the dichotomy of abundance and its consequences. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the seductive power of opulence and the enduring struggle to reconcile the pursuit of wealth with the moral fabric of society.

I have been a photographer for four decades in New York and currently reside in Brooklyn. My body of work is titled Misbegotten Places, which involves creating small dioramas from photographs I have taken. Through careful camera angles and lighting, these dioramas are transformed into lifelike images that can often deceive the viewer, while always conveying a sense of "misbegotten." The lines between reality and fiction are blurred, as these lifelike dioramas, when photographed, often deceive the viewer with their uncanny realism. However, true to the collection's title, "Misbegotten Places," each scene is infused with a subtle element of the unexpected or the out-of-place, challenging the viewer's perception and inviting them to delve deeper into the narratives woven within these meticulously crafted compositions.
