About The Artwork

I choose this still life subject because I am triggered by te beauty of the different plums. The deep red color of the bigger plum contrasts with the fresh green smaller ones. Together they form a quiet and coherent composition, in the clean and soft environment. I am inspired by the Dutch 17th century still-life paintings, where food still lifes where mostly overwhelming and extra-ordinary. I search for minimal and pure components to be opposite to this overkill. Focussing on the pure elements of the fruit gives them more space and attention. In our modern life there is for me also too much information, what makes us rush and stop looking at the beautiful natural things.

I am raised in the Burgundian south of the Netherlands, studied art history (specialization 17th century Dutch Visual Arts) at the University of Utrecht, where I have build up my imaginary library. Feeling the urge not only wanting to consider art, I started at Statief in Utrecht my photographers education to create art, with a great interest in still lifes. The common thread of my still lifes is stillness. For me, everything comes to life in the tranquility of photography. The natural forms of fruit and vegetables, for example, are photographed as if each object has a personality. My still lifes are actually portraits to me. I choose the compositions carefully, and hope to give a balanced result, creating something extra, such as the depiction of movement or lightness.Time has just stopped, to enjoy the simple beauty of nature even more.
