Limited Edition 1 of 10 "Tokyo Dizzily Land" series are based on a collage of his own digital photographs as well as historical pictures combined with his own drawings. He brings together modern, state of the art technology with old Japanese art genre concepts. He describes his works as a modern form of Ukio-e (wood block prints produced in the 17th and 20th centuries) and Rakuchu-rakugai-zu (Japanese paintings usually painted on partitions between the 16th and 19th centuries). Both of these older art genres focus on motifs of real scenery, but interpreted by the artist in their own ways. Likewise Furutani says of his work, “I focus on a particular point and trim that scene and cut that city landscape off and reconstruct them as I feel. Most of the scenes are taken from what I have seen or where I am living at the time. Through the collaging of a multiple number of different images, often of parts of buildings in cities, landscapes, or scenes of people in action and by adding his own drawing onto them, Furutani’s images come alive.
