I have recently become artist in residence in a beautiful garden in south-west England. The Walled Garden at Mells is a gem, in one of Somerset's most gem-like villages. During my year-long residency I shall prepare work with other artists for an exhibition in Mells that I'll be curating during the summer of 2021. As an artist, I shall be exploring the theme of gardens directly, reflecting on the many meanings they carry for us, the many forms they take. I shall use the garden as a lens through which to explore humankind's larger relationship with nature, aware that this relationship has reached a point of profound crisis in which life as we know it could be destroyed by fire, flood and boiling seas. As I research my project I'll explore the growing complexity of gardens through time, the many forms and functions that have developed to mirror the growing complexity of human society. My end point will be the idea of the Global Garden, a way of looking at the entire world as one vast garden, made up from the interconnection of countless smaller gardens. I am reaching towards a way of thinking and acting that unites gardens the size of half a tennis court to impressive parklands, to farms and forests, to great cities and wild places under threat, to ecosystems the size of Amazonia or the Pacific, to the global survival system itself. This project was inspired in part by "Candide", a novel written close to 300 years ago by the writer-philosopher Voltaire. He tormented his young hero with countless humiliations, threatened executions, torture, floggings, theft, shipwreck and a gigantic earthquake. He rewarded him at the conclusion of the book with a beautiful and abundant garden that he could cultivate with contentment and a sense of purpose. In our world, which is even more tormented than his, perhaps we should take Candide's final advice: "We must cultivate our garden." This piece is printed on archive quality rag paper. It is also available printed on organic cotton which is suitable for for framing or for hanging loosely on a wall, or in a space where the translucency of the fabric will respond to changes in ambient light. Other sizes are available on inquiry.

ARTIST CURATOR. I work as an artist curator, minus the hyphen. I attempt to balance both roles: seeking the concentration and focus of making images, objects and installations that are directed at the individual viewer; embracing the collaborative and enabling task of shaping exhibitions and events that are created in the company of others. As an artist, I work invariably with a high definition camera, but my intention is to reach beyond the image - towards the making of an effective and affective object, perhaps even an experience. Inevitably, this leads me to explore both materials and the immaterial, scale and the use of space. As well printing on art paper, I print onto aluminium, acetate and fabric, especially linen and cotton. When appropriate, I like to let the prints hang freely, unmounted and unframed, so they can respond reflexively to movements in the air. And I use translucency to animate the prints further, as they alter their appearance in response to changes in the light. Although these frequently large prints are at the centre of my output, recent exhibitions have included video projections, sound installations and handmade books, or booklike objects. Making books as been an interest for a long time, but now it is moving towards the centre of my output, as a complement to the translucent prints As a curator, I seek to create exhibitions that both generate and contribute to conversations, that cross boundaries and widen horizons. In addition to visual artists, my exhibitions often include contributions from performers, using movement, music, words and ideas. At present I am getting great pleasure from working with poets. I think poetry and visual art -both of them elusive and allusive media- can become great companions.
