Inspiration came from travels to southern Asia and from my unique experiences where I was drawn to the contrast, contradictions and similarities to "my" western country. Thru the photographs I wish to show how an "emerging" country and one considered "first world" seemed to collide, like fresh water dumping into the sea. Dirt roads, shanty housing and no lack of litter, while certainly not everywhere, was accompanied by the ubiquitous beacon of commercialism which always seemed to shine thru. The fire red signage and curvaceous white script, often combined with verbiage only a local might understand, regardless beckoned one to "enjoy life", While the signs sometimes showed their age, capitalism unflinchingly showed its face everywhere, from the country side to the city, on every corner like a Bodega in NYC. Sadly what seemed to lack was the familiar place to socialize, for people to gather, and for children to play; squares, parks and playgrounds. These manipulated sepia photographs, a series of 10, are indicative of everyday life and of the typical life and building facades I experienced. The sepia effect adds a sense of timelessness, while also allowing the red of the Coca-Cola signage to pierce thru into the foreground. The silhouettes of children playing were added to contrast this, shown like a shadow that may just disappear like when the sun hides itself behind a cloud, it is an idea of what could or what maybe should be. Juxtaposing the images of children vs a corporation begs the question as to which we value more in modern society not to mention one that is striving and clawing towards an unknown, though very familiar, future.

Originally from Columbus Ohio, I graduated from The Ohio State University with a B.S. in Architecture, where I worked with the Architectural theorist Jeffrey Kipnis on my first large scale installation, a back-lit wall of bee's wax. Two years after graduating, I moved to New York in November of 2001. Since that time I have been working as an artist, engaging with various mediums and styles of art, with a studio in the Brooklyn, USA as well as in Eltville, Germany.
