About The Artwork

Before covid, I specialized in what I refer to as gelatin silver "spiritual landscapes," primarily made via true infrared film. I began making experimental photograms in June 2020, due to having an unfinished darkroom at the time of the shutdown; Making this alt process work (going on 4 new bodies of work now) was not only what got me through nearly 2 years of pretty consistent isolation, as well as over 3 years of printing withdrawal (the result of losing my prior darkroom to NYC rent hikes in 2017), but also seemed to change me as artist - almost overnight. By late 2020, I had completed my first 2 bodies of cameraless work; early in 2021, my "Metamorphosis" (series) began to take shape, and to my very happy surprise, the awards started coming in (and I also began teaching some of my processes via Penumbra Foundation, as well as privately). This series is presently ongoing. “Fire & Ice” was born in March 2022. This sister series (to “Metamorphosis”) was inspired by my first snow and ice photograms (printed the month prior), as well as some new (self-created) processes with ice and sand -- and is literally made with fire and/or ice. Further, this new work marks my transition from experimental photograms to alt process landscapes, as I bring more and more elements of nature (as well as some not so natural elements) into the darkroom. All of my process are of my own design. The processes aren’t always kind to the paper, so there tend to be some interesting marks left behind. All of my images are essentially (subconscious) self-portraits (or “natural equivalents”), which reveal themselves during my printing process; However, in the case of my photograms, the titles correspond to what I see in the images. All of my photograms are exposed with alternative light sources, including sparklers, a firework led, dripping candles, and more. Some of these light sources are also rigged for contrast.

Kimberly Schneider is a Visual Artist, Educator, and Master Printer who has been dedicated to the art of the handmade (darkroom) print for the past 20+ years. Born in Chicago and based in New York, she has a fully functioning darkroom in her apartment, which is not something she takes lightly. Specializing in true infrared film, spiritual landscapes, and experimental photograms, she holds a BFA in photography (and a minor in philosophy) from Colorado State University; While both are deeply intertwined, she identifies as a Printer more than anything else. Kimberly began making photograms with handheld light sources in June 2020, due to having an unfinished darkroom in/taking over her apartment at the time; By sheer luck, or perhaps a matter of fate, the wet side of her current darkroom was essentially complete just 2 weeks prior to the shutdown (the dry side wouldn’t be touched for another 6 months). What began as a way to deal with both isolation and printing withdrawal (after losing her prior darkroom to NYC rent hikes in 2017), quickly led to her metamorphosis as an artist, as well as her current source of income (after losing her prior job to the pandemic in July 2020). Six bodies of work and several awards later, she not only teaches her experimental processes both remotely and in-person but has also been quite fortunate in the print sales department. And she couldn’t be more grateful. Schneider's silver gelatin prints have been exhibited (domestically) at Scott Nichols Gallery, Photo Forward Los Angeles, The Camera Obscura Gallery, SanDiego Art Institute, Lightbox Photographic Gallery, Stonehenge Gallery, Art Intersection, ZIA Gallery, The Photographer's Eye Collective, Photo Méthode Gallery, among other art galleries; She has also shown in Barcelona,Spain, as well as in Ireland (and virtually at The Louvre). She is honored to have work in the Collection of Susan Herzig & Paul Hertzmann, San Francisco, among private collectors, and also does custom commissions (privately) upon request.
