About The Artwork

An isolated Hawthorn, growing as part of what was an old boundary hedgerow, in the centre of Brighstone Forest, Isle of Wight. The hawthorn has traditionally been used to mark boundaries for centuries and is now becoming increasingly important in the drive to provide environmental solutions for sustainable development. A Hawthorne hedge can provide cooling properties as well as insulating properties to buildings, they can reduce the risk of flooding and support biodiversity. They reduce air, noise and soil pollution and are cheaper and easier to grow, when compared with other green solutions such as sedum roof's or vertical gardens. The hawthorn species itself provides the greatest number of environmental positives.
