Laurel is a writer, photographer, and creative director. Questions of identity, culture, social psychology, and perspective-shifting have fueled Laurel’s work, threading together a diverse portfolio of roles and experiences. She grew up in the mountains of Colorado, studied at Stanford, and lives and works in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her current creative project, A Year in America, aims to find connection in an increasingly divided country, through intimate conversation, firsthand observation, and wide-reaching exploration. Armed with just her audio recorder, camera, and dog, Laurel traveled the country solo for sixteen months. She conducted over 150 long-form interviews with strangers from all walks of life, listening to their stories — as they see them, as they tell them. In addition to meeting all different types of Americans, Laurel spent countless hours exploring the streets and trails of every state, witnessing firsthand the blight, beauty, and moments of everyday life in the places we call home. Her photographs in "Line + Color" are pulled from this work. She is currently working on a book, which will be a collection of stories, interviews, and photography from her year on the road.
