About The Artwork

Muhoza the Thinker, I call him the thinker because this photo reminded me of Rodin’s amazing statue, The Thinker. It is such an uncommon way to see a gorilla sitting, and that is what I love about this shot. I’ve never seen a picture of gorilla sitting in such a pose, so deep in thought – showing us the similarity between us and them. Everything about the gorilla reminds me of a human, not yet evolved, yet struggling as we all do for love, survival and life. Each experience I had with the gorillas and in particular the silver backs was as unique as meeting different people. They have individual mannerisms and habits. Being in their presence brought me back to a primal experience, but also a reminder of our responsibility to not only our world, but all of the creatures that we share it with. ***** This image is also available in a larger 48” size. All of my photographs are printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag paper using archival Epson inks. Each print has a black key-line around the image as well as a white border of approx 1-2", so matting is not necessary. A portion of proceeds is donated to African conservation causes in the area where the images were taken.

Born in Providence Rhode Island to immigrant parents, his mom from Germany and his dad from Portugal, Roberto spent much of his childhood moving between Germany and the US before finally settling in New Jersey and then Florida where he first began photography as a hobby. He quickly learned the ins and outs working (for free) in the local darkroom of the St Petersburg Times. In high school Roberto began photographing many of his girl friends, which eventually led to a career in beauty and glamour photography. Later, his passion for animals led him to found the non-profit organization Bound Angels and dedicate a great portion of his time and effort to saving shelter dogs. In 2017 Roberto Cabral travelled to Kenya and Rwanda on a trip to honor his dad’s love of travel. It was on this trip that his focus for photography melded with his passion for animals, the environment and conservation. The images from this trip which he entitled “A Fragile Strength” encapsulate the delicacy of our world and the creatures who we share it with. Cabral’s images capture the raw power and the fragility of these creatures simultaneously in beautiful fine-art black and white photography. In great strength there is vulnerability, and in vulnerability, great strength. This collection shows the raw power of the natural world, and its delicacy simultaneously. – Roberto Cabral
