The work is from an exhibition I held at the Museum National d’Histoire Naturelle in France. The exhibition was the result of three months spent in the famous gardens of Paris and Versailles, at night, long after the parks were closed to the public. I was given permission to photograph the Remarkable Trees of Paris and Versailles at night - using my special technique of painting light onto the trees in order to draw out their personality and to offer an alternative perception of these important natural and ancient forms. This photograph was taken at night in the Jardin des Tuilleries, near the Louvre. I had to gain special permission to be in these gardens at night. I chose photography as my medium as these trees are not imagined, but are real. I photograph at night to offer an alternative perception of the real tree. I hope viewers might witness the beauty, even sacredness of these trees. For more info please visit my website http://www.louisefowlersmith.com The image measures 70 cm x 54cm. With a 6 cm margin the print will measure 82cm x 66cm. It will be printed onto archival fine art paper, unless requested otherwise.

As an environmental artist my focus has been on the natural environment for many decades. For the past 20 years I have focused on Trees, a subject I was drawn to for the magnitude of their environmental significance and their universal, pan-religious symbolic importance.I illuminate the natural world both physically and metaphorically. With light I paint a ‘portrait’ of the tree and capture a moment in a tree’s life.I have done this work in many countries around the world. Darkness is a part of vision - it can frame something without destroying it. Through framing the natural world with darkness the specificity of that world is revealed. I am the founder of an eco-arts collective, The Tree Veneration Society Inc. https://treevenerationsociety.com
