In my 'Bars' series, nothing is clear-cut: this random scene with indistinct figures immersed in the hazy glow of a night bar is unsettling, dreamlike, and in my 'remembering gaze' refers to the opening frames of Tony Scott's 1983 film debut The Hunger, with the interior of a New York nightclub, where the lights barely pierce through the cigarette smoke. As in many of my photographs, here I draw on cinematic means developed in German Expressionism that define the film noire style: the use of the so-called low key/low lighting key, i.e. the visual effect of an image with a dark grey scale, the resulting hard contrast of black and white and light giving a dark image of 'dark on dark' with an advantage of shadows. The image field thus organised determines the psychophysiology of reception, evoking negative emotions, sadness, disapproval, drama, etc. The film noire style of this photography thus transmediates with the modernist tradition (including Saul Leiter's street photography), in order to ask how and why it resonates in the contemporary metamodern photography that I practice.
