'Once was Home' developed as I was confounded by a state of inner homelessness that begins to set in with rapid urbanisation / gentrification; swiftly taking over locales in cities as they expand, marking a new demographic, a changed sense of spatial relationship. It made me question loss and attachment, the vital which rests in the familiarity of a visual tapestry that has grown layer by layer, marking the very milestones that make this collective space 'Home'. Who and where are we, when everything known is suddenly alien, removed, separated from us - contextually, even poetically. The attempt was to introduce the feeling of an impression, of something fleeting, possibly decaying yet creating a unique resonance enmeshed with the environment it had been a part of for centuries, forgotten possibly but still around . . . Handprints seemed intimate and ephemeral, as the process of burnishing ink into the paper, trapped a certain light into the layers giving the images an other worldly quality, and the mark making, impressions of my palms and fingers were unique to each print. The images were constructed layer by layer, repeating the movement of time, its additions and erasures, it's inherently nostalgic quality in the face of transition. I was looking for a frozen sort of poetry in the images - spontaneous and rapid, yet fragile, whimsical, even elusive as I began translating the works.
