About The Artwork

"The drama of storm laden clouds sweep across Zealand on the eastern shores of Denmark unleashing their passion towards the tiny harbour of Alabodarna on South Coast of Sweden. The turbulent sky is juxtaposed with the buttery textures of a disquieted sea. The early evening sun meets the cloudburst pushing back the onset of darkness as if to say; the storm will pass".   I could see the storm gathering across the Oresund from the balcony of my Atelier on the south coast of Sweden. The summer storms can be violent but they come and go like a thief in the night. I grabbed my equipment and quickly cycled to the tiny harbour of Sundvik. My method requires at least 15-20 mins swimming to begin to feel the motion and personality of the ocean at any given time. It takes time in the water to feel, to listen and hear what the sea wants to say. The cold water helps to purge the mind and soul of distractions. I usually take 1-2 hour swim even in winter, and then return into the water ready to capture the ocean. In winter when the air temperature is sub-zero, and the water can be as low freezing I may have only 10-15 mins left before it becomes dangerous. During the moments when the storm came closest there is little time to think, it's mostly intuitive. The preparation of being in the water and the existential experience takes over. What I am trying to achieve is to make the seas stand still just long enough to hear its voice. Verisart Certificates of Authentication (including on the blockchain) and signed by artist. Shaped by over 25 years of working and living in some of the toughest communities around the world, Nigel brings to his artistic work formative experiences of the human condition. He wrestles with questions of meaning, hope, and finds inspiration derived from individual and collective action overcoming injustice and hardship. Nigel cites his creative influences amongst others as the New York abstract expressionist movement of the 1950s, and the visual works of August Stringberg and Joseph M W Turner. Nigel (b67) was born in Wigan, a former coal mining and textile town in the Northwest of England. Leaving school at 16, he later went on to study theology in London and Philadelphia, and holds a MBA from the University of Liverpool. The artist is also founder of calyah, a design and craft company that brings together award winning designers with artisans from underserved communities. He lives between Grindelwald in the Swiss Alps, and on the south coast of Sweden. Nigel is married to Christina and they have three daughters, Sofia, Emilia, and Daniella.
